◎简　　介
　　山野の漂泊う山の民の一族で、群子の親分と呼ばれる木下一と一人息子の太が、亀蔵とクニの一家が住む川原の瀬降りを訪れた時には、山はもうすっかり色づいていた。ヤゾーが来たのは二人の息子カズオがハナという娘を嫁に迎えたためで、その仲立ちをするのであった。二人の祝言は古式にのっとり行なわれ、二人は山の民の掟に従って翌朝、新六合へ向かって旅立った。ヤゾーは一年前に妻を亡くしており独り身であった。クニはそんなヤゾーに、カズオの妹ヒデをさかんにすすめるがヤゾーはとりあわなかった。冬－－。兄が去り、ヤゾー親子が去ったヒデは何となく寂しい気分でいた。そんなある日、亀蔵が死んだ。葬儀には各地から一族の仲間が集まったが、何以かカズオとハナの姿がなかった。その頃、カズオはある村で巡査に捕まっていたのだ。窃盗と兵役忌避の疑いで取り調べを受けていたカズオをやっとのことで助けだした...
