　　在履历了很多的困难后——包括让泰勒相信他们简直来自未来——进取号的船员们成功地救援了两头座头鲸，并将它们带到未来，实时地拯救了地球。然后船员们被带到了联邦委员会的眼前，接管众多的控告。没有被作为被告的斯波克也与其他船员们站在了一路。最初，鉴于他们新近的勇敢表示，除了对柯克中将的控诉外，针对其他被告的一切控诉都被撤消。柯克以作为一位下级军官却违反号令的罪行被判有罪，并意味性地被降职为上校以示惩戒；但作为对他勇敢行为的表彰，他被录用为联邦星舰进取号-A的舰长。与进取号船员一同来到23世纪的泰勒博士，决议加入星际舰队并成为一位科学官。
