　　13年前，还是孩子的N被关进了伦敦北部一间叫做Dorothy Fish的精神医院，她在这个“牢狱”里寂静地生活，没有任何不满，没有任何臆想。她大白在这里只要不一般才是最一般的，所以每年的检查后N对自己的病情没有任何好转的迹象很满足，由于这样她就永久属于这个小小的避风港。天天只要和病友们分享Plutoperidol和Cerberum (精神药物，命名自但丁《神曲》的炼狱篇中的天堂保护神)，喝点自酿的小酒，清闲安闲，不用担忧账单、不用理睬他人。
　　
　　单身母亲，黑人女孩Poppy Shakespeare的到来，打乱了N的计划，Poppy 从进到医院的那天起头就只要一个动机，找到自己是正凡人的证据，出院和女儿团圆。她请求N的帮助，N则劝慰Poppy随遇而安，顺应这里的生活，那怕只是装个样子。两个年轻女孩的生活轨迹渐渐有了交集，N的生活有了色彩与欢畅，她甚至起头化装、穿短裙，Poppy也渐发现神经病人们莫测的心里一样藏有温情，疯狂的思惟中一样怀有希望。

　　虽然这是一个并不轻松的话题，却被作者和演员们以轻松、黑色的英式诙谐诠释的绝不艰涩，即即是噙着泪花她们仍然笑对这个癫狂的天下。抛开小说的布景，这更像是报告一个差别群体间的故事。它的配角不可是正凡人与非正凡人，黑人与白人的故事，一样也可以是汉子与女人，当地人与异乡人，任何和我们纷歧样的人群。让我们试着睁大眼睛，多领会他们一些，也许同时你会发现对自己也有了新的熟悉。
