　　迪兹（加里·库珀 Gary Cooper 饰）是一位小有成就的贩子，早已经衣食无忧的他希望可以从忙碌的事务中脱身，将时候更多的花费在自己的爱好爱好之上。一笔代价两万万的巨额遗产从天而下降到了迪兹的头上，报社询问派来了记者芭比（琪恩·亚瑟 Jean Arthur 饰），希望她可以从迪兹的身上挖掘出一些吸引眼球的消息。
　　
　　刚起头，芭比非常看不惯迪兹的处世为人，但随着时候的推移，她渐渐被后者的善良和正直所吸引，两人之间发生了浪漫的恋爱。迪兹决议将获得的遗产用于帮助深陷贫苦的人，这一行为遭到了律师约翰（Douglass Dumbrille 饰）的质疑，他果断的以为迪兹的脑壳能够出了什么题目，甚至将他告到了法庭。
