　　英国作家詹姆斯·米勒（威廉·施梅尔 William Shimell 饰）来到意大利城市托斯卡纳为新作《正当副本》举行讲座。他与读者会商书中的概念：关于艺术创作实在性的群情是毫无需要的，由于复制品自己即是原作，原作也是由其他作品复制而来。一个做古玩买卖的法国女人（朱丽叶· 比诺什 Juliette Binoche 饰）带着11岁的儿子介入了会商会，想为刚买的书索要签名。中途由于儿子饿了她提早分开，临走时留下了一个电话号码。
　　
　　米勒和女人在她的古玩店再次相遇，他们驱车去郊外看一样工具。她开着车载着米勒无目标游荡，议论书的主题，参观博物馆，议论她叛逆的儿子，两人一路上争持不休。在一个咖啡馆，女老板以为米勒是女人的丈夫，就起头和她围绕米勒会商起婚姻。因而他们将错就错，米勒起头饰演女人的丈夫，两人约会，去宾馆。可是副本只是复制，而非原作，米勒竣事复制身份，单独分开了郊外。
