　　奥天时年轻的皇后茜茜（罗密·施奈德 Romy Schneider 饰）遍访匈牙利，感遭到这里的群众对她毫无政治性的热情，她深深地喜好上了这个国家和群众，这也是唯逐一种能让她逃离维也纳皇室生活压力的法子。但是，当她和安德森伯爵在匈牙利抚慰不愿屈就的贵族时，皇太后苏菲（Vilma Degischer 饰）却在散布茜茜与伯爵之间的谎言。弗兰兹（卡尔亨兹·伯恩 Karlheinz B?hm 饰）一向埋头国事，听凭母亲苏菲去干涉朝政，甚至包括女儿的抚养题目。当茜茜被诊断得了严重的肺结核病时，弗兰兹居然允从母亲的意义让医生将女儿从茜茜身旁带走。茜茜被送往悠远的岛上养病，孤独无助的她在母亲的经心庇护下，身材逐步康复。茜茜康复以后伴随弗兰兹前往意大利北部停止拜候。那边的民族主义者们激烈地否决奥天时的统治，对全部王室表示出很大的敌意。可是，当茜茜和她的女儿在圣马可广场重聚时，意大利群众被善良的茜茜感导了，他们热情地接待她和女儿的团圆。
