　　影片故事依照实在事务改编，詹姆斯·默里博士（梅尔·吉布森饰演）率领下的编委会要停止新版本的《牛津英语字典》的编辑，以那时的人力科技水平，完成字典的编撰要一个世纪才能完成，詹姆斯·默里博士开创性的采用了全民介入的方式，让全英操纵英语的人一路为字典收集词条界说，并经过寄信的方式发送给编撰组。
在收集界说进程中，他们发现了一个叫W.C.迈纳（西恩·潘饰演）的医生零丁进献了一万多条引语，这是一个专业措辞学者都很难完成的工作量。当编委会决议向他致敬时，一个惊人的究竟曝光了：原本迈纳医生，是美国内战时代军队的一个军医，由于得了精神割裂症而犯杀人罪，被禁闭在精神医院，是一个被以为是疯子的人。
一位教授、一个疯子，人类历史上最早的英语大辞书就这样在两个迥然分歧的人手中诞生。
