　　烽火纷飞的年月，英国乡下的一处农场保持着安好的风光。格林太太（玛吉·吉伦哈尔 Maggie Gyllenhaal 饰）单独经营着这处家庭农场，期待从军退役的丈夫归来。农场和家里三个调皮捣鬼的孩子令她费劲心神，败家的亲戚菲尔（瑞斯·伊凡斯 Rhys Ifans 饰）又不时上门纠缠。本来菲尔自己在外欠下了赌债，诡计拿格林家的农场抵债，屡遭拒绝仍贼心不死。更令格林太太头疼的是，她的侄子和侄女要从城里来乡下长住以躲避烽火。这对养尊处优的堂兄妹与格林家的三个孩子格格不入，双方一碰头便激发了家庭大混战，失控的大势令格林太太几近解体。
