　　花花令郎阿兰（莫里斯·荣内特 Maurice Ronet 饰）在疗养院中停止了六个月的戒酒治疗。疗养行将竣事，但他并不能必定自己能否康复。他经过看书、吸烟、写日志、把玩手枪、剪贴报纸上关于灭亡的报道来平复心里的恐惧与忧伤。他和美国的妻子分家，同时又与妻子的朋友莉迪亚（莱娜·斯克尔拉 Léna Skerla 饰）纠缠在一路。莉迪亚要求阿兰与妻子摊牌，与她生活在一路，但阿兰拒绝了。回到疗养院，阿兰在医生的激励下决议试侧重新融入社会，打仗自己的朋友们。在巴黎，他起头造访昔日的朋友，却发现今时的人们全都变节了畴前的社会观、政治观，变得虚张声势，没有人可以了解他，甚至对他停止明嘲暗讽。阿兰心中刚刚燃起的积极信心完全地被摧毁了，他没法粉饰对这个天下的厌恶，再次堕入失望当中。阿兰最初一次把自己灌醉，醒来以后，整理完房间和行李，接了一个电话，读完一本费兹罗杰的小说，他拿脱手枪朝着自己的心脏开了一枪。
