　　1945年7月，东南亚的战事接近序幕，一队日本兵士行进在撤往泰国的途中。上等兵水岛（安井昌二饰）在音乐学院身世的队长批示下，用自学来的竖琴鼓舞士气，抚慰战士忧伤的思绪，后更以音乐为前言，同接管他们投诚的英国兵士告竣了心灵上的相同。水岛接到使命，去劝降一队负嵎顽抗的日本兵士，但是那些战士拒绝接管天皇的号令，终极全数战死，侥幸存活的水岛被一位缅甸老僧所救，他偷走了对方的僧衣，在前往战俘营的路上埋葬日军尸身，到达战俘营的水岛目击英国报酬战友举行的葬礼，若有所悟，因而赶返来路，去埋葬那些由于自己害怕而弃之掉臂的同胞遗骸。水岛的战友们相方想法打探他的着落，最初被水岛奉告，自己还有没完成的义务……
　　本片获1956年《电影旬报》年度十佳第五位、威尼斯电影节圣乔治奖。
